Basic Purpose
To provide direct nursing care activities and supervision of Certified Nursing Assistants within the parameters of his/her license to practice as a License Practical Nurse in the state of Louisiana; to support the mission and philosophy of BSI, Inc.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
A. Directing/Providing Resident Care in Nursing.
- Observe the condition of the resident, record any pertinent changes in the resident’s condition in the medical record and notify the attending physician, responsible party, and nursing administration.
- Take vital signs as ordered by the attending physician and record findings in the medical record.
- Assess and orient new residents upon admission.
- Continuously re-assess residents.
- Participate in the care planning process including: assessment, formulation, implementation, evaluation, and revision.
- Collect, label, and arrange for transfer of specimens to laboratory as ordered by the attending physician.
- Perform wound care/treatments as ordered by the attending physicians, document appearance of wounds and procedures performed.
- Administer medications as ordered by the attending physician document on the medication administration record. Follow policies and procedures for pharmacy services as listed in the Healthcare Policy and Procedure Manual.
- Assist physician with procedures and rounds
- Assure accuracy of food and fluid documentation by the Certified Nursing Assistants.
- Communicate with Dietary all admissions and discharges via the Communication Form.
- Answer resident call lights.
- Follow facility policies and procedures in the event of a residents’ death.
- Maintain Medication and Treatment Carts to State Standards.
- Assist residents with ADLs as required.
- Provide a report to the oncoming shift.
- Communicate with Social Services when resident or family issues arise.
B. Supervise the work of the Nursing Assistants assigned to Nursing
- Determine duties which can be safely and appropriately delegated to unlicensed personnel.
- Provide supervision/oversight/guidance of work performed by Certified Nursing Assistants.
- Initiate disciplinary action as outlined in Broadway Services, Inc. employee handbook when appropriate.
- Enforce the cell phone policy at all times.
- Participate in employee performance evaluation process.
- Review resident care plans with Certified Nursing Assistants.
C. Observe Federal, State, and Local Laws/Regulation and Administrative Polices of Nursing at Lambeth House.
- Maintain a current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Louisiana.
- Maintain records of controlled substances.
- Ensure that a physician’s order is obtained for all medications, diets and treatments administered to residents.
- Document all treatments, medications and observations in the resident’s medical record.
- Complete a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education annually.
- Ensure that he/she is familiar with fire and disaster plans; when to evacuate.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from a state accredited school of Practical Nursing.
- Currently licensed to practice as a Practical Nurse in the state of Louisiana.
- Continuing education as required by the Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses.
- Good physical and mental health.
- Ability to apply and execute orders of physicians and registered nurses with the limitations of educational background/licensure, and with an understanding of the cause and effect of such action.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, residents, families, physicians, and the general public.
- Freedom from communicable disease.
- Must maintain a current CPR Certification
Typical Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift/push at least thirty-five (35) pounds.
- Must be able to maneuver medication carts throughout the unit.
- Must be able to, bend, turn, sit, and stand as needed to care for residents.
- Must be able to read and write as necessary to complete necessary communication.
Compensation: $25.00 - $29.00 per hour
